Shandrowski, George Richard Shandrowski, age 62, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2019 in St. John Paul II Center. George was born on March 18, 1957 in Bridgeport and was the first son of the late Walter Shandrowski Sr. Walter joined the US Navy with his close friend George Barker when WWII began. Both Walter and George made a promise to each other if anything happened to one of them they would name their first son after the other.

Sadly George Barker was killed in action, and Walter named his first son George. George Shandrowski was a life long resident of Fairfield Connecticut, attended Fairfield College Preparatory School, member of the DeMolay society and St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Stratford, where he served as Organist for many years. He served honorably in the US Navy for 6 years on the U.S.S. Tacoma and then submarines for 3 years.

Highly intelligent and naturally gifted George Shandrowski was a prolific musician, learning to read music in 6 months to assume the position of organist at St. Josephs’ parish. George not only learned a complicated musical instrument, he also learned to respond to the priest in Polish (Polish was the preferred language for St. Josephs back in the earlier days). He sang Polish hymns and played for many weddings and funerals and had a natural ability to sing challenging songs such as Ava Maria.

This he accomplished at the early age of sixteen. While in the DeMolay organization George delivered the “Flower Talk” by memory which is a sacred ceremony for the DeMolay order. The Flower Talk is a dedication to parental love and an abiding devotion to those who raised us from infancy or cared for us in our youth.

George is survived by one brother, Walter Shaw and wife Joanne Shaw of Fairfield, one half-sister, Judy McMillian and husband Tim and family, one half-brother, Rockey Williams and wife Jeanne and family who reside in Maryland and several cousins who reside in Connecticut, Virginia, Washington DC, Vermont and New Jersey. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph’s National Church, 1300 Stratford Road, Stratford celebrated by Rev. Thomas Walsh.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home, 2220 Main Street, Stratford.
