YOUNGSTOWN – George T. Lipjanic Jr., 83, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 14, 2018, at his home, where he wanted to be, surrounded by his loving family. George was born March 27, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of the late George T. Sr. and Ann Kozar Lipjanic, and was a lifelong area resident. George was a 1953 graduate of Chaney High School.

He worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube at the Brier Hill Works and was an electrician in the seamless mill. George retired when the mill closed, and was one of the last workers to leave. Known as “Lippy,” George was a very good baseball and softball player.

He had a successful tryout with the Cleveland Indians after high school, and was a offered a contract with the team after batting against Bob Feller. George declined the offer due to special family circumstances, and went to work in the steel mills. George did play shortstop for many championship softball teams in the area, and he passed on his knowledge of baseball to his children and to the players he coached in the Mill Creek Junior Baseball League.

He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Sorrows, Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown. George will always be remembered by his family as a very kind, loving, and generous man, and always made a point to tell everyone as they left his home to “be careful out there! ” He had a terrific dry sense of humor that made people laugh at the most unexpected times, and even during his last days, George’s humor elicited smiles from his family and caregivers.

He enjoyed fishing with his buddies and watching the Cleveland Browns play. George also enjoyed gardening and supplying his neighbors with fresh home-grown vegetables. George leaves his three children, Karen (Mike) Vargo of Boardman, Michael Lipjanic of Phoenix, and James Lipjanic of Boardman; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sue Campenella of Newton Falls.

Two sisters, Jean Giovanni and Mary Ann Naylor, and a brother, Edward Lipjanic, are deceased. Per George’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or public services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.
