Obituary of George Carter George Washington Carter age 66, passed away March 2, 2019 at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC following heart surgery. George was born September 14, 1952 to the late Hugh and Mary Carter. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother William Carter.

George graduated from Wytheville Community College with an associate degree in 1976, then received his bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory MT (ASCP) in 1985 from Bluefield State. George was employed by Wythe County Community Hospital for 40 years. Many say that George came with the brick when the hospital was built.

George enjoyed and loved his job and touched the lives of many. George was known for his excellence in teaching as he worked regularly with Wytheville Community College Medical Lab program working with the students as a teaching lab. George encouraged the students to work hard, study hard, and required them to be good ambassadors of the profession.

You heard many times by his co-workers through-out the hospital, “I just love George”. George was a man of knowledge, good nature, and a caring personality. George was known for his skills and knowledge in which was requested from the people of the community often as they came to the hospital for testing and treatment.

He was awarded the honor of a lifetime membership in the Virginia Jaycees. He was nominated for his high honor by the Wytheville Chapter for his outstanding accomplishments and service to the community. Mentor to many including “Camp Wishing Well”, for the children whom loved ones had passed and trying to find their way as a child in life.

George enjoyed his retirement with his wife Diana on his small farm in Crockett, Va. He enjoyed working with his cattle, working in his shop including wood working, and vegetable garden that he and Diana worked as a team. George is survived by his wife Diana who he always referred to as a “good woman”, his daughter Patricia McKesson, sisters, Mary Jenkins, Charlotte (Clay) Carter, Denise Wilson and brother, Jerome Carter.

Also left to cherish his memory are his step children Amy, Amanda, Josh, five grandchildren, Jasmine, Lincoln, Kaden, Layla, and Trae. George was a man of many friends. Special friends includes Doug Matney, Brian Matney, Charles Heldrith, Kenny Wilkenson, Jim Hartlige, and surrounding close neighbors of the Crockett and Wytheville community.

Funeral service will be held 3 PM, Wednesday March 6, 2019 at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Reverend Kevin Fiorini, with interment to follow in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 PM until service time. Special thanks for all the prayers and all those friends who were by his side during his illness, the special teams at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, and Wythe County Community Hospital that communicated with doctors at Wake forest for stable and safe transport and wonderful NP Cathie Harrington.

George will never be forgotten but remembered by many. Heaven has gained an Angel. We love you.
