After 95 years of life, Georgie Hendrix O’Connor has rejoined her savior. She passed peacefully on Sunday, July 8, 2018. Georgie was born in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1922 to George and Evangeline Hendrix.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Bill. She is survived by her four sons Bill (Julie), Mike (Julie), Pat (Mary) and Casey (Kathy); 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Jane Montgomery. Georgie moved to Arroyo Grande in 1928 and graduated Arroyo Grande High School in 1941.

She met her husband Bill at a USO dance in 1943 and they were married in November of that year. Georgie spent 12 years as a member of the Arroyo Grande Recreation Committee starting in 1950 focusing on raising funds for the Harvest Festival. In 1983 Georgie and Bill were the Grand Marshals of the Harvest Festival.

Georgie was a pillar of the community; one of the longest serving school board members in the state of California. She served on the Arroyo Grande Elementary School District which later became part of the Lucia Mar Unified School District for 49 years, serving 12 consecutive terms, retiring in 2010 at the age of 88. The Lucia Mar Board Meeting Room is named in her honor.

In 2006 Georgie was honored by the State of California for being one of four longest tenured school board members. She was also awarded the Grace N. Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award for Women of Distinction which is awarded for works of public and community service over an extended period of time. Georgie was known for her dedication to students and support of teachers.

Many have stories of Georgie slipping them money to buy pencils, classroom supplies, yearbooks or running shoes for their students. Her biggest priority was the wellbeing of Lucia Mar students. Georgie’s legacy of service grew out of her strong Christian faith and unwavering trust in God.

She had an immense and generous heart. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch Ave. Grover Beach.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 25 at the Arroyo Grande Cemetery. A reception will follow at Grace Bible Church, 100 Rodeo Dr, Arroyo Grande. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Eagle Athletic Foundation 495 Valley Rd.
