Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Helmstadt lived in the Woodhaven section of Queens, NY and then Beth Page, NY before moving to the Concordia community in Monroe Township in 2009. He was employed for 25 years as a mail handler for the U.S. Post Office, Queens, NY, retiring in 2004.

When Mr. Helmstadt was growing up in Brooklyn he was known as “Butch” and during his years working in the Post Office he was known as “Stretch”. He was an Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. He was a parishioner of Nativity of Our Lord RC Church, Monroe Township.

He enjoyed his granddaughters, going fishing and buying scratch-off lottery tickets. Mr. Helmstadt was predeceased by his two brothers Edward and Robert and his sister Marcella Fedynich. Surviving is his wife of 49 years Harriet Domski, his daughter Victoria Peterson and her husband Andrew of Newtown, Pennsylvania, his sister Marguerite Cucolo of New City, NY and his three granddaughters Eva, Violet and Alivia.

Services will begin 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the Lester Memorial Home 16 W. Church St., Jamesburg followed by a 10 a.m. funeral liturgy at Nativity of Our Lord RC Church, Monroe Township. Committal and Cremation will be at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. Visiting hours for family and friends will be Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 8:15-9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
