GERTRUD SCHMITZ MANTEL, left her family on Saturday, October 20, 2018, to join loved ones who were waiting for her. Gertrud, also known as Gerta or Trudi, was born on July 5, 1933, in Cologne, Germany, and moved to the United States where she married Duane Mantel and had a family. She loved talking to people everywhere and that was shown in her different jobs such as when she worked in a carryout next to the old Bowsher High School during the 1970s and enjoyed talking to the students, being the bar manager for the Bavarian Sports Club for several years, and working in bingo until into her 80s.

During her last years she focused on using her crocheting skills to crochet bookworms that she donated to Hospice of NW Ohio, the Susan Komen Race for the Cure, and the Dana Cancer Center at UTMC as well as sharing them with people she met on a daily basis to bring out smiles. She was predeceased by her husband, Duane Mantel, granddaughter, Dena Monroe, parents, and brothers. She is survived by her loving children, Dianne Mantel, Carol (Steven) Mantel-Miller, and Kevin (Kerry) Mantel, and grandchildren, Maria Miller and Zachary Miller.

Services will be private. Any expressions of sympathy may be made to the Maumee Valley Save a Pet Society or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
