Gertrude Marie (Gibson) Werth passed away in Butler on November 2, 2018 at the age of 97. She was the devoted wife of Richard P. Werth and loving matriarch of 7 children, 18 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren. Gertrude was born in Butler on March 18, 1921, the oldest of seven children born to Theodore R. and Bertha M. (Schreiber) Gibson.

She was an avid student who skipped several grades, graduating Butler High School at the age of 16. She married Richard on June 26, 1940 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage prior to Richard’s death in 2010. They enjoyed raising their family and traveling the United States.

They especially loved and explored Colorado where they lived for a number of years. Gertrude’s love of Colorado led her to be recruited to sell real estate for McCulloch Oil Company. Until recently Gertrude loved to garden and neighbors would often stop and compliment her beautiful flowers.

Up until the end, she wrote in beautiful penmanship birthday cards to every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. She had a remarkable memory and was the family historian. Gertrude was a central presence to all generations of her family and her love for every one of them was returned in full measure.

She is survived by four sons, James (Judy) of Lake Mary, FL; Robert (Rita) of Las Vegas, NV; John (Mary Kay) of Amherst, OH; and Thomas (Debbie) of Butler; 2 daughters, Carol (Michael) Greenberg of Palm Desert, CA; and Joyce (John Gillis) of Modesto, CA; sisters Nancy Fisher of Greenville, PA, Sally McCormack of Hadley, PA and sister-in-law Shirley Gibson of Hermitage, PA Preceding her in death were husband Richard, son William, grandson Ian McCLosky, and brothers Lesley, Theodore Jr, Homer, & George Gibson. Visitation will be at Geibel Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 6th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Gertrude’s life will be on Wednesday, November 7th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church where she was a parishioner. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
