OBITUARY Gilbert Salce Ramirez November 19, 1931 – November 19, 2018 Gilbert Salce Ramirez passed away on November 19, 2018. It was his 87th birthday. He was born in Stockton California to Fernando and Asuncion Ramirez.
The Family did not stay long in California. They returned to the small community of Ojocaliente, Aguascalientes, Mexico. It was here he spent his early years honing his gardening skills.
These would serve him well in his later years. Family and friends never had far to go for fresh fruit and vegetables. His backyard and hard work produced plenty for all.
Before returning to California with his father he had time to become accomplished as a baker. Many a morning we would wake to the sound of the radio and a fresh batch of warm tortillas waiting for the mantequilla to be spread on them. He spent his mid-twenties working for Eli and Nick Puglucovich Cement Pipe.
In 1961 his life took a major turn. He spent nearly a year at Merced General Hospital after being hit by a vehicle. He had both legs, arms, and back broken along with being in a coma for many months.
His strength, will, and family guided him back where he was able to regain the ability to walk and speak after much rehabilitation. Gilbert was not able to return to full time work after the accident but that never stopped him from doing all he could around the house. He had a knee replacement in his early 70’s and that seemed to give him new life.
He was still gardening well into his later years. Gilbert was a role model for determination, strong will, and that “never give up” attitude. If you asked him how he felt he would always reply “okay”.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Rebecca, just short of three months ago. They are both back together now for eternity. Gilbert is survived by this three children, Gilbert John, Diana Ramirez-Alcaraz, and Debi Houghton (husband Stacey).
His grandchildren Richard Ramirez and Jennifer Salgado (husband Rolando). He leaves 5 great-grandchildren Lainey, Bekah, Katie, and Jacob Ramirez and Sabian Salgado. He is also survived by his brother Juan Ramirez, and sisters Sara, Margarita, Guadalupe, and Josephina along with many nephews and nieces.
We would also like to acknowledge the great care he received from Kathy Rodriguez, Maria Salcido, Jennifer Salgado, and Diana Brauchler. We appreciate all their hard work and comfort they provided during these last few years. A special thank you to his grandson in-law, Rolando Salgado, who was always available to help when needed.
