Gilmer “Gil” Roper, age 75, of Marion, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 while at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. Gil was born on April 2, 1944 in Macon County to the late Roby Roper & Lola Bryant Roper. He served his Country honorably in the United States Army, and was retired from Great Lakes Carbon.

He was also a member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church for 37 years. Gil always had the biggest smile, and was a very friendly man, who never met a stranger. He was a great husband and father, and will be truly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 54 years, Sarah Reel Roper of the home; a son, David Roper and wife Jenni of Marion; and a brother, Clarence Roper of Fairview. A visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019 in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Ryan Bennett officiating.

Military Honors will be conducted at the end of the service. Gil will be laid to rest at Bethlehem Community Cemetery on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation can do so to the WMU at Cross Memorial Baptist Church at 15 Cross Memorial Baptist Church Loop, Marion, NC 28752.
