Gloria Bernetta Grant, only child of Leila and Harold McLaughlin was born in St. James, Jamaica on Friday June1, 1934. Fondly called Mama, Ma, Grandma by family members and Mrs. Grant, Miss Gloria, or Miss G by others, she went to be with her Lord on Monday December 24, 2018. Gloria grew up in Somerton, St. James where she received her early education.

She later became a seamstress, got married and begun rearing a family. Always wanting the best for her family, Gloria along with her two girls (Dorothea and Elsie) moved to Spanish Town. This move proved pivotal as the family grew to include two boys (Hector and Devon), the set was complete.

This was a close-knit family where each member was welcomed and could rely on the support of each other. Gloria was a caring no-nonsense disciplinarian who looked after the needs of her family. In her early years she worked as a seamstress and later in the healthcare profession.

She devoted her life to caring for her family as well as any needy person she encountered. Often as kids, we were asked to deliver packages and envelopes, – not knowing the content but as we got older, we realized that mama was making sure that other families had food on their tables, money for their children’s lunch and fabric for the dressmaker to make the next outfit for their children. Things were not always perfect.

Like other families we had our challenges, but mama had strong faith and would rely on the divine power to guide us. She was strong physically and emotionally; and from her we learnt at an early age what loyalty meant, how to love, how to empathize with others, how to always treat everyone with respect and that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. As children we understood that life was a journey and everyone we met along the way was significant and was in our lives for a reason.

Gloria lived a full life and family was special for her, having been an only child. Her word to her children captures it well, “I want all of you to continue to live together well and look out for each other”. Left to cherish her memory are: Children – Dorothea, Elsie, Hector, Devon, Grand children – Renea, Britt-Ann, Andre, Pia, Jessica, Corey, Antoine, Armani, Gabrielle & Erin Great-grand – Ayana & Davad Son-in law- Gersham Daughters-in-law – Tiffany & Karlene Mama you taught us well.

We were recording and at the appropriate time we will always play back. Your journey has ended. Rest in Peace!
