Obituary for Gloria John Dulany Smith GLORIA JOHN DULANY SMITH Gloria John Dulany Smith, 95, passed away on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018 at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade. She was born in Tulsa, OK, on June 14, 1922. She graduated from Pahokee High School and Florida State College for Women with a degree in Music Education.

She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She married Sydney Smith of Belle Glade in 1943. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage.

After World War II, she and her husband returned to Belle Glade. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, prayer group leader, choir member, pianist and member of United Methodist Women. She taught first grade at Belle Glade Elementary School for thirty years, where she imparted a love for books and reading to many children.

She was a member and past president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an educational and philanthropic organization. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her mother and father, John and Miriam Dulany, her husband, Sydney Smith Jr., her son, Sydney Smith Ill, and her grandson, Brian Tindale. She is survived by her children, Gloria Lively (Edwin) of Belle Glade, Kathryn Tindale (Bob) of Tallahassee and Allen Anne Walker (Wesley) of Port Orange; her brother, Philip Dulany (Saundra), of Belle Glade; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

“Meemommie”, as she was known to her children and grandchildren, had a strong love for her family and Jesus. She was her family’s #1 prayer warrior, and she would pray for every family member by name at the kitchen table with Granddaddy. She and Granddaddy started “the beach house” in New Smyrna Beach to cultivate family relationships.

Thanks to Meemommie, this family vacation that was started over 35 years ago is still happening yearly, and now includes 37 of her family members. A time of visitation with family and friends will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, June 8th at the Community United Methodist Church in Belle Glade followed by a service to celebrate her life at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in West Palm Beach.
