Gloria A. Cortez, age 68, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Tuesday August 21, 2018. She was born March 25, 1950 to Jose M. and Rafaela D. Almanza in San Antonio, Texas and was the oldest of 8 children. Being the oldest, she helped care for her younger siblings.

Her family always joked that she was always in charge, and would refer to her as “La Patrona” or “La Capitan” most notably during the family tradition of tamale making during the Christmas season. Gloria had one daughter, Danielle, whom she loved and adored. Together, not only as mother and daughter but as best friends, they enjoyed life.

They were inseparable. They enjoyed reading, going to plays, musicals, museums, and concerts. They loved to travel and visit new places.

Her favorite place to visit was San Francisco, CA. She gave the greatest advice to always try your best and never give up. Gloria will be remembered as a very loving, caring, giving, and strong woman.

She endured more than most and always did it with a smile. Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Rafaela D. Almanza and numerous aunts. She is survived by her father, Jose M. Almanza and his wife, Margie Almanza; daughter, Danielle Cortez; grandchild/pet, Scrappy; sisters, Mary A. Cantu, Irene A. Quintero, and Rosalinda A. Vega; brothers, Joe Almanza Jr., Jesse D. Almanza, Abel D. Almanza, and Frank D. Almanza; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Gloria touched are invited to reminisce and celebrate the extraordinary life Gloria lived. A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday September 8, 2018, at 1:00 PM, at the Y Living Center located at 835 W. Southcross, San Antonio, TX 78211.
