OBITUARY Mr. Gordon Emmett Woodall December 31, 1931 – October 19, 2018 Gordon Emmett Woodall, 86, of North Charleston entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 19, 2018. He passed away, peacefully, at home surrounded by his loving family. He fought a long, courageous battle against dementia and was an inspiration to all who knew him.

The 5th of 12 children, he was born to Walter and Lilly Morris Woodall on December 31, 1931 in Estill Fork, Alabama. In 1952, Gordon joined the US Army to serve his country during the Korean War. While in the service he met and married Peggy (Blackhurst).

After living in Germany, and then a few moves within the states, the couple eventually moved to Camden, SC, where their two children, Kim and Russell were born. In Camden, Gordon, or “Woody” became a successful businessman, owning and operating several service stations as well as the then privatized Camden Bus Company. The family moved to their home on France Avenue in the Park Circle area of North Charleston in 1965 where he lived until his passing.

From that home, Gordon again built several successful businesses from the ground up. He led his last business, Woodall’s Sandblasting and Painting, until he retired in 1994. He was also active in local politics and was instrumental in the push to incorporate the city of North Charleston.

He remained active in his community for most of his life. He coached baseball and football in Park Circle and was a positive influence and mentor to many youth in the community. In later years he was also a member of North Charleston Senior Citizen’s coffee club where he tremendously enjoyed weekday morning coffee and the camaraderie of lifelong friends.

Gordon was passionate about sports. His clear favorites were University of Alabama football (“Roll Tide Roll”), and the Atlanta Braves. He was an avid golfer himself, passing his love of that sport to his son.

In his retired years, his number one hobby became traveling the country with his wife, Peggy, in their RV. However, his favorite role was that of grandfather, “Papa”, to Kate, Melinda, Tracy, Matt, and Max. He adored and cherished his grandchildren and that adoration and love went both ways.

Gordon was predeceased by his beloved wife Peggy, his parents, and seven of his siblings. In addition to his children: Kim Irene Woodall (Dwayne Meads), Russell G. Woodall (Beth) and grandchildren: Catherine Hart Lynch (Carl Evans), Melinda Lee Lynch (Taryn Moreland), Matthew Woodall (Jacqueline), Tracy Thompson (Kenny Kelly), and Maxwell B. Taylor; Gordon is also survived by his siblings W.R., Faye, Louise, Pearl, and Benton; great grandchildren Hank Woodall, Luke Woodall, Wyatt Woodall, Hannah Kelly, Ansley Kelly, and Mason Kelly as well as a very large extended family of many nieces and nephews. Additionally, we are forever grateful that Papa stayed with us long enough to meet his newest great grandson and namesake, Emmett Evans.
