Obituary of Gregory Bagley Gregory Page Bagley was born the oldest of four sons, to Garrett Bagley and Carrie Gregory Bagley on September 19, 1930 in Harlem, NY. He was ushered from labor to reward on September 3, 2018. Greg and his brothers were raised by their mother after their father passed away in 1943.
Greg’s early education was in the public schools of Manhattan, NY and Baltimore, MD. Greg dedicated his life to the Lord at an early age and was an active member of Sharon Baptist Church throughout his teen years. Greg enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950, where he served as a maintenance technician during the Korean War.
After completion of 3 years of military service, Greg went on to pursue higher education. He earned degrees from Morgan State College and Johns Hopkins University, eventually earning a Master of Science in Applied Physics from Adelphi University. In 2011, Greg was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Eastern Theological Seminary.
Greg met Helen Smith at Sharon and later entered a lifelong covenant of marriage on June 10, 1956. To this union were born three children: Greg Jr., Carole and John. They lived most of their married life in Hempstead, NY.
At the time of Helen’s death in 2008, they had enjoyed over 52 years of loving partnership. Greg was employed as an electrical engineer for over 30 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. His work at Brookhaven included many projects including the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.
As an active member of Union Baptist Church in Hempstead, NY for 40 years, Greg served on the Deacon Board, Senior Choir, Social Action Committee and was Sunday School Superintendent. He was also involved in the community as a member of the board of the Park Lake Management Association and Long Island Youth Guidance. In 1998, Greg and Helen retired to Maryland and rejoined Sharon Baptist Church.
They continued to live out their passion to help others – especially children – through their volunteer work with many church and community organizations, including the Deacon Board, Sunday School, Saturday School, the Angel Tree Project, the Sharon-Gilmore Partnership and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Most recently, Greg volunteered at New Song Academy, teaching elementary students to play chess. Greg had a love of music and enjoyed singing on church and community choirs.
Until recently, he sang with the Community Concert Choir of Baltimore. Helen and Greg also shared a love of travel. They enjoyed spending quality family time on camping trips and were also able to travel extensively abroad to destinations, such as the Holy Land, Egypt, West Africa, China, Greece and Italy.
Greg was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Charles and Garrett. Greg’s legacy of dedication and service to God and others will continue to be an inspiration to all those he loved and who loved him: his son, Gregory Bagley Jr., (wife Easter and children Joel and Arielle); his daughter, Carole Biggers, (husband José and children Matthew and Simone); his son John Bagley, (wife June and children John Jr. and Alicia); two sisters-in-law, Edna Smith and Lucille Bagley; two church families, Union Baptist and Sharon Baptist and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to World Vision.
Gregory Page Bagley, age 87, of Catonsville, Maryland transitioned Monday, September 3, 2018 in St. Agnes Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland.
