OBITUARY Grover Cleveland Fewox February 29, 1924 – September 13, 2018 Grover Cleveland Fewox, 94, of Pimlico Plantation, Moncks Corner, SC, husband of Neta Idell Bird Fewox, entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 13, 2018. The funeral will be Wednesday, September 19, at 11:00 am, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 East Montague Avenue, North Charleston. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

Grover was born in Hilliard, Nassau County, FL, on February 29, 1924, the son of Ellis Franklin and Louise Braddock Fewox. His mother died when he was two years old and was raised by his grandparents, William George and Katie Stokes Fewox, of Hilliard, FL. He enlisted in the Navy at Jacksonville, FL, in April 1942 by having his father sign for him for a six-year enlistment.

He was trained in ordinance and mine warfare and assigned to the USS Sperry AS-12, as a torpedo man. The Sperry earned the distinction of being the first U.S. Navy ship to be launched after “Pearl Harbor”. Grover served on this submarine tender in the Pacific front until the end of World War II and the Sperry then returned to Mare Island, California Grover met his wife, Neta, while she was visiting her sister in Jacksonville, FL, who was married to Grover’s brother.

Neta returned to Savannah and wrote to him for two years during the war. On leave from the Sperry in 1945, Grover came to Savannah to see her and after returning to duty, he mailed her an engagement ring, Grover paid for her flight to San Francisco and they were married in Vallejo, CA, on March 29, 1945. He also served on the Bushnell AS-15 in Pearl Harbor, HI, after the war and the Nereus AS-17 in San Diego, CA, before being transferred to Charleston, where he served on destroyers in the Atlantic Fleet.

Grover retired from the US Navy after 20 years, as a Senior Chief Torpedo man, and also from the Naval Weapons Station after 18 years where he worked on missiles and mines. Grover and Neta were married 72 years, living in Hanahan for forty years before moving to Pimlico in 2001. They volunteered many hours of work at Holy Spirit and St. Thomas Episcopal churches and attended church services every Sunday unless sick.

They enjoyed the service clubs, VFW, the American Legion, and FRA where Grover had 55 years of membership. Grover was preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers, and his youngest daughter, Deborah Ann (1973) In addition to his wife Neta, he is survived by two daughters, Linda (Bill) Brinson of North Charleston and Gwen (David) O’Neal of Concord, NC. Five grandchildren, Billy (Sheri) Brinson, of Summerville, SC, Brian (Kim) O’Neal of Lancaster, SC, Scott (Christi) Brinson, of Summerville, SC, Julie Shuman, of Knoxville, TN, Joyce (Chris) Hanclosky, of Mt.

Pleasant, SC and twelve great-grandchildren, Hailey Brinson, Brice Brinson, Nathan Brinson, Andrew Church, Matthew Church, and Ben Church, of Summerville, SC, Hurley O’Neal, Sydney O’Neil and Shelly O’Neal of Lancaster, SC, Sam Shuman and Avery Shuman, of Knoxville, TN and Sophia Hanclosky, of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
