Obituary of Grover Elliott Grover “Jug” Elliott, Jr., age 94, passed away on January 7, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 6, 1924 in Marcus Hook, PA to Grover P. Elliott, Sr. and Ida Rash Elliott. Jug spent most of his adult life in Claymont, DE where he was a star athlete and four-sport letter man at Claymont High School.

He entered the Navy during WWII, but was discharged due to perforated eardrums. Disappointed but undaunted, he joined the Merchant Marines and served his country on a hospital ship in the Pacific. He returned home and attended West Nottingham Academy, where he finished his education.

On August 12, 1950, he married Sheila Thompson and together they had two children. Jug continued to play semi-pro baseball, work for Delaware Power and Light (later Delmarva) and retired at age 59. For many years he coached Babe Ruth League and American Legion baseball.

He also continued to coach track and field hockey at Claymont after his retirement. He touched and impacted the lives of all the young adults he met. He was also a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (West Chester, PA).

Jug was pre-deceased by his wife of 49 years and was lucky enough to find love again with Cathryn (Kay) Allen Spicer Elliott. Jug never knew a stranger! He made friends wherever he went and would always help a friend or stranger in need.

Some referred to him as “the man with a twinkle in his eye”. In June, 2007, after being nominated by a number of the players he once coached, Jug was inducted into the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame – one of the proudest moments in his life. Also, he was later inducted into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jug was always a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Cathryn; son, Dennis (Saalik) Elliott of Fort Lauderdale, FL; daughter, Nancy (Eddie) Ellis of Columbia, SC; stepsons, Bob Spicer of Newark, DE and Jim (Nancy) Spicer of Fort Mill, SC; grandchildren, Britt (Rachel) Ellis, Elizabeth (Don) Carter, and Clarke (Mairead) Ellis; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Elliott Carter and many beloved step-grandchildren and step-great-grand-children. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Maris Grove, 200 Maris Grove Way on Friday, January 11, 2019, 2:00PM.

Interment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will remain private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial donations be made in Jug’s name and in honor his great-grandchild, Elliott Carter, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder, homocystintura (HCU). Please send memorials to: HCU Network America, 15 South Mallory Ave.
