Gunars Paul Smits of Albee Twp. , age 77, passed away after a long struggle with illness on Saturday March 2nd, 2019, at Saginaw Senior Care Facility. He was born in Jelgava, Latvia on August 2nd, 1941, son of the late Volfgangs and Zinaida (Cernisovs) Smits.

Gunars graduated from Saginaw High School. The love of his life, his wife Rosemary Smits, preceded him in death 3 weeks ago. They were married for 49 years.

Gunars retired from General Motors in 2002. He served his country in the United States Army for three years as part of the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division specializing in parachute assault operation and was honorably discharged. He loved his family dearly.

His greatest enjoyment came from his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, news of and visits from them always brought him happiness. Gunars loved and enjoyed history, birds, fish, horses, pheasants, gardening in the yard, hockey, and listening to Polka music. His wonderful life will be cherished by his four children: Felicia (Kelly) Gewirtz, Mitchell (Candy) Krugielki, Amy (Chris) Beldyga, and Christopher Smits.

Grandchildren: Angela Gewirtz, Ashley (Rey) Cruz, Stephanie Gewirtz, Brandon (Kelcie) Krugielki, Brentt Krugielki and Chelsea Jensen. His greatgrandchildren: Jayce, Braxtyn, Chaselynn, Cali, Elijah, Alivia, and Jaxson. He was the eldest of six children and his siblings include: Askolds Smits, Dean (Paulette) Smits, Claudia Miller, Zina Smits, Sylvia (Kim) Stephens – he loved and cherished them dearly.

In-laws: Pat Dundas, Sharon Wirth, John Sauve, Tillie Henninger, Don Seeley, Carmen Torres and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death in his in-laws: Roger Henninger, Mike Henninger, Karen Sauve, Nina Seeley, Richard Dundas. A Memorial Gathering for Family and Friends will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10th, 2019, at Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning.
