Obituary for Harel Leon Jackson Dr. Harel L. Jackson, born November 29, 1929 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Henry Jackson and Florence Johnson-Jackson. As promised by God, Dr. Harel L. Jackson, known as Papa Jack, was received by God on December 11, 2018 after a long-committed life of service in ministry. Dr. Jackson grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and his early education was received in Charleston.
After graduating, he joined the United States Army and served his country from March 8, 1950 until retirement. During his tenure, he obtained the positions of Sergeant, an Intelligent Specialist and Honor Guard for two previous seated United States Presidents, which assignments were not prevalent for Black Soldiers. He received the Purple Heart medal for his service in the Korean conflict Era war, as well as a Bronze Medal of Service in Korea.
He also received a Bronze Medal of Occupation in Germany, as well as a Bronze Medal for good conduct during World War II. Dr. Jackson received his honored name of “Papa Jack” because of his many sons and daughters in the ministry, as well as his love and generosity for people. While working out his faith, he started a non-profit charity foundation called “Food Share” that feeds the hungry and homeless.
He received a Master of Arts in Theology from Golden Grain Bible College and Seminary and later obtained his Doctorate in Theology. Dr. Jackson received numerous certifications for equipping the Saints for the work of ministry as an Educator, teaching at the Channel Islands Bible College and Seminary, as well as numerous local churches. He leaves two daughters, Malinda G. Azie and Rev.
Helena J. Jones (Bobby); grandchildren, Tameria L. Jackson, Bobby L. Jones (Chante’), Marcus C. Jones and Jason D. Jones; great-grandchildren, Makayla E. Jackson, Terion M. Jackson, Loreal D. Jones and Jason D. Jones, Jr.; one niece, Deborah Jackson-Shariff; two special friends, Len Mata and Ricardo Melendez; and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus in the Oxnard community in California. A Homegoing Celebration Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel in Rock Hill. Burial will take place at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC with military honors.
