Harold Frederick Abey Sr. age 90 passed away on July 8, 2018 at home. He was born on July 11, 1927 on the family farm to Fred and Famie (Elmer) Abey. Harold married Mary McDermott on April 3, 1948 at St. Paul Catholic Church Evansville and they just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Harold farmed all his life starting out milking cows and raising crops on the family farm. Along with Mary they raised four children and continued to farm until their retirement. Harold was active in 4-H… Read More » and continued for many years as a 4-H leader.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church Evansville and sang in the choir for several years. He was on the Board of Directors at the Union Coop for twelve years, an AMPI Director, and belonged to the National Holstein Association, He was active in the Rock County Dairy Promotion Council, helping organize the first dairy breakfast on the farm, for 40 years he managed the kitchen. Harold and Mary were inducted into the Rock County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2017.

They both enjoyed polka dancing and traveling together. He loved his family and enjoyed hosting family dinners with children, grandchildren and great children. They would have as many as 62 people in their house for the holidays.

He will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Mary, his children, Harold (Pam) Abey Jr. of Evansville, Maureen Kay (Steve) Hoffman of Sun Prairie; Mindy (Darrell) Larson of Brooklyn; John Abey of Brooklyn, , sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, a sister Janice (Victor) Horstmeyer of Sun Prairie, a niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday July 12, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church Evansville with Reverend Kevin Dooley officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery Evansville. A visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday July 11, 2018 at Ward-Hurtley Funeral Home Evansville and from 10:00am until the time of service on Thursday at church.
