Mathis, formerly of Rome, NY, passed away Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Lutheran Home in Clinton, NY where he resided. He was born in Rome on September 11, 1935 the son of Frank and Elsie Bauer Mathis and was a graduate of Westmoreland Central High School. On June 29, 1957 Harold married Ida Cornish, a union of 58 years until her passing on July 1, 2015.

He was employed for many years with Peretta Candy and later with Herkimer Wholesale until his retirement. Harold was an avid sports enthusiast and a devout Boston Red Sox fan. He and Ida enjoyed road trips that included visiting family and friends, and going to various music venues.

Harold spent countless hours attending his children’s various sport activities and found immense joy in doing so. His Christian faith and his family were important to him. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Lori Mathis, GA, Mark and Joan Mathis, and Tim and Karen Mathis of Westmoreland; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Carol Fike and her husband, Alan, Slingerlands; sisters-in-law, Franny Mathis, Oriskany, Marion Heaps, Minoa; and several close nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bob Mathis and brother-in-law, Robert Heaps. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court St., Rome. Relatives and friends may call at the Home for Funerals Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. Please omit flowers.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
