OBITUARY Harry Augustus Slye July 8, 1925 – October 19, 2018 HARRY A. SLYE PASSED ON OCTOBER 19,2018 AT THE AGE OF 93. HARRY WAS A GRADUATE OF ENSLEY HIGH SCHOOL, MAY, 1943, A MEMBER NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. HE ENTERED THE ARMY IN AUGUST OF THAT SERVED WITH THE 1255′” COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALION.

AT 19 YEARS WAS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST SERGEANTS TO SERVE IN THE ARMY. HE PARTICIOPATED IN EVERY MAJOR BATTLE IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF WAR, AND WAS FOR BRAVERY. HARRY ENTERED MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN SEPTEMBER, 1947, AND COMPLETED 3 YEARS OF STUDY BEFORE BEING CALLED BACK INTO AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE KOREAN WAR IN JUNE, 1950.

AT THE END OF CONFLICT HE BEGAN HIS CIVIL SERVICE CAREER AT THE ARMY PROVING ABERDEEN, MARYLAND. IN THE MID FIFTIES HE TRANSFERRED TO THE REDSTONE ARSENAL, HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA AND WAS INVOLVED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERSHING MISSILE SYSTEM. HE RETIRED FROM CIVIL SERVICE AT HIGHEST LEVEL OF SERVICE IN JULY, 1975.

HARRY SPENT HIS RETIREMENT YEARS TRAVELING TO EVERY STATE IN THE UNION AND VISITING EVERY CAPITAL CITY. HE ATTENDED MOST OF THE ANNUAL REUNIONS OF THE 1255TH COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALION. HE WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS MOTHER AND FATHER, MARY AND ERNEST SLYE, AND BY TWO OLDER BROTHERS, ERMEST SLYE JR.

AND JAMES SLYE. HE IS SURVIVED BY ONE BROTHER, GLENN SLYE, NIECES DOROTHY SLYE ENSLEIN, JUDY SLYE WOHLTMAN, ANNE SLYE THOMAS, SLYE ANDERSON, AND NEPHEW GERRY SLYE, IN ADDDTION T0 MANY GREAT NIECES AND NEPHEWS. BURIAL WILL BE AT ELMWOOD CEMETERY, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT 10:30 MONDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 22, 2018.
