Hattie’s Obituary Hattie Vermaat, age 86, of Jenison, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years and love of her life, Peter Vermaat. Hattie was born on a farm in Little Rock, Iowa, to Harley and Janetta Blau on New Year’s Day, 1933.

She had 8 sisters. She attended a country school and high school in Little Rock. Hattie graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and became a teacher.

She taught in country school for 2 years while Peter was in Korea. She married Peter on July 8, 1953, and they moved to Michigan where they made their home. She was a stay at home mom, and they had 4 children.

They loved traveling and went on many fun trips and enjoyed spending winter months in Florida and California. Hattie later volunteered for 15 years for Spectrum Health Hospital in pediatrics which she loved. She was always active in her church and loved quilting and other crafts.

She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Hattie is survived by her children, Steve and Karen Vermaat, Sharleen and Dave Clauser, Shelley Vermaat, Diane (deceased) and Al Saxbee; 8 grandchildren, Josh and Christine Saxbee, Ben and Brittany Saxbee, Marissa Groen, Mikaela Saxbee, Brad and Andra Clauser, Heather and Mike Michalek, Emily and Jared Dykema, Katie Vermaat; 9 great grandchildren, Connor Saxbee, Evan Saxbee, baby Saxbee (deceased), Evalie Groen, Anna Saxbee, Zoey Saxbee, Nicholas Saxbee, Lorence Michalek, Henry Clauser, Wilder Dykema; sisters, Grace Averill, Janet and Norman Decker, Priscilla Swenson, Beverly and Joe Patterson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Janetta Blau; sisters, Anna Johnson, Hazel Winter, Wilma Klingenberg, Sylvia Harberts.

Funeral services for Hattie will be held on Saturday, May 11, at 11:00 A.M. at Hudsonville Reformed Church, 3950 Highland Dr. Hudsonville, MI, with Pastor Scott Van Oostendorp officiating. Interment Georgetown Cemetery. Visitation will be at VanderLaan Funeral Home on Friday, May 10, from 5 to 8 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice or Hudsonville Reformed Church.
