Hazel’s Obituary Silver Spring MD – Hazel Kimble Montgomery died Friday, March 8, 2019. She was 92. Hazel is survived by her daughter Roxann Montgomery and Roxann’s husband Daniel Ligon; her son Douglas Montgomery, his wife Nancy Ketterer, and her grandsons Taylor and Carter Montgomery.
Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Carson Montgomery; her brothers Marvin and Doris Kimble, her sister Ivery Kimble; and her parents Taylor and Jumillie Kimble. Hazel was born into a loving family in 1926 and grew up on a farm in Laurel Fork, VA. Her youth was filled with farm work, family businesses, school, and music.
Hazel met Carson after his return from serving in the US Navy in World War II. They were married in York, SC on July 19, 1951. Together they moved to Baltimore where they lived and worked for several years before starting a family and moving to Dundalk, MD.
Hazel devoted her life to her family – focusing her energies on their care and well being. She and Carson always had a family project underway. From gardening to crafts to home renovation projects, they always worked as a team.
She was a loving mother who stressed the importance of education and, through her own example, instilled a joy of learning in her children. An avid reader, she enjoyed history and keeping up with current events. She read the local newspaper front to back each day and loved to discuss the latest news.
Hazel loved to sew, quilt, cook, and can fresh vegetables from her garden. She also loved country music and playing the piano. While most of her musical talents were self-taught, she also took piano lessons at the local community college.
She also enjoyed baseball and followed the Orioles throughout each summer. Hazel loved her grandsons, Taylor and Carter, and in her late 70s learned to use a computer and the Internet so that she could keep up with their activities. Each day, Carson would ask Hazel to “check the computer” to see if there was an email with updates about their grandsons.
In 2008 Hazel began to experience the early physical symptoms of Lewy body dementia. For the last 11 years she fought a strong and determined battle against the disease – diligently striving to maintain her health and independence. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, VA.
