Herbert Clayton “H.C.” Moretz One of Sanford’s most colorful residents, Herbert Clayton “H.C.” Moretz (86) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 16, 2019 at Central Carolina Hospital. He had been in failing health but was his indomitable self until hospitalized. Always with a strong opinion and not afraid to state it, he was a prolific writer of fiction with one published book, “H’s Stories,” along with three unpublished manuscripts and numerous short stories.

He was a homespun philosopher, historian, quick witted and generous to a fault. He loved a political argument and always sided with the underdog. He always found some good in all people.

H.C. was born in Boone, NC on January 12, 1933, the oldest of four children. He lived in Wilmington, NC during World War II where his father helped build warships. He was a veteran of the Korean War and spent time in Japan.

After WWII, with a couple of interim moves, H.C.’s family settled in Sanford, where he founded Moretz Electrical Company and began his writing passion. He built a home on key road and loved the place with a palpable passion. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his youngest brother, James Douglas.

He is survived by daughter Sandra (Hal) Dixon, sons Clay (Nan), Mike (Dawn), grandchildren Burton (Ashley) and Elizabeth Dixon, Adam (Conley) and Colton and Madison Moretz; great grandchildren Claire and Brooks; sister Norma Horvitz and brother, Bobby (Ruth) Moretz in addition to nephews and grand and great grand nephews; and his children’s mother, Mary Moretz. He is also survived by his longtime friend, Amanda Tillman, and her son Trey Thomas. He will be missed by many.
