Herbert was born August 9, 1939 in Dermott, Arkansas, one of ten children, to Doris and Jonathan Davis, where he grew up. He attended Chicot School.

Later, his family moved to Robbins, Illinois. Here he confessed a love and belief in Christ and joined the New Friendship Baptist Church. Serving on the Junior Usher Board is where he found his love for ushering.

He attended Eisenhower High School in Blue Island. He excelled in Track and Field but loved all sports and enjoyed playing football. After graduating from Eisenhower he joined the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served for seven years.

In 1964 he married the love of his life, Gwen Buice of Chicago, and to this union one child, Herbert L. Davis, II, was born. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, “Herbie”. In 1968, Herbert decided to become an entrepreneur.

First, he became a general contractor, and then in 1981, he acted on his dream and purchased his very own hardware store. It was in 1995 that he started Celebrity Limousine Service, which was the most fun and exhilarating, for he was doing what he enjoyed the most – being of service and meeting new people. He was a CEO of several successful businesses in Harvey, IL.

Upon retirement, he and Gwen moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas where they immediately joined the Village United Methodist Church. He was a member of United Methodist Men, served as chairman of Ushers and was a member of the Administrative Council, and had a real passion for missions. In the 90’s, Herbert traveled to Puerto Rico for a mission project of rebuilding homes.

With this opportunity to serve, his love of missions was born. He also had been a past member of the Gideon’s. He and Gwen were devoted members of the Optimist Club in Illinois and brought that passion of working with children and serving community with them to Arkansas when they joined the Optimist of Hot Springs Village.

Herbert was in charge of the Optimist fundraiser events at the Coronado Center and helped with Tri-Sports events at Jessieville, Fountain Lake, and Mountain Pine schools. Herbert made his transition from his earthly home to his heavenly home Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 5:30 AM at the John McClellan VA Hospital in Little Rock. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving and devoted wife of fifty-four years, Gwen Davis; four sisters, Bessie Lloyd of Sharon, TN, Mary (Shelby) Scales of Hot Springs Village, Hisar Moore of Steger, IL, and Bernice Momoh of South Chicago Heights, IL; five brothers, Clarence Davis of Villa Park, IL, Jonathan (Fannie) Davis of Hot Springs Village, Arthur (Doris) Davis of Homewood, IL, Willie (Pauline) Davis of Dixmoor, IL, and Melvin (Jackie) Davis of South Chicago Heights, IL; two grandchildren Herbert Davis, III of Park Forest, IL and Javonne Davis of Gary, IN; three great-grandchildren Zion and Londyn Davis of Park Forest, IL and Caleb Davis of Gary, IN, daughter-in-law Gilvonne Davis of Gary, IN; a host of beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives and numerous dear friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Friday, November 16, 2018 at Village United Methodist Church, 200 Carmona Road, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Burial will take place at 11:00 AM in the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, 1501 West Maryland Ave, North Little Rock, Arkansas.
