OBITUARY Herschel Darwin Paradise June 7, 1925 – January 4, 2019 Niantic- Herschel D. Paradise, 93, formerly of 16 Huntley Court, Niantic, passed away on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019. He was born in Bakersfield, CA to the late Perle and Della (Freeman) Paradise on June 7, 1925.
He proudly served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. He was present in Tokyo Bay, aboard the USS Missouri, to witness the surrender ceremonies of Japan ending WW11 in 1945. After retirement he worked for the State of CT as a licensed plumber, at Seaside Regional Center and State Prison for Women in Niantic.
He was a member of VFW, American Legion, and the Holland Club for submarine veterans. He was a past Master of Bayview Lodge of Masons in Niantic. Also a past Patron of Eastern Star.
A longtime member of Flanders Baptist and Community Church. He married Lillian C. Fanghenel Root in 1951. Together they enjoyed their collie dogs, gardening, clamming and crabbing.
They attended town functions and organizations they were members of. After Lillian’s passing he met and married Lucy Stuart in 1982. They traveled around the country in their RV from CT to AK, CA, AZ, and every winter to FL.
They enjoyed gatherings with family and friends for holidays and Sunday dinners. He is survived by his nephew, David Paradise (Melanie) of Cottonwood, AZ. Nieces Mary Veomet and Patty Taylor of AZ, Vicki Diego and Teresa Paradise of CA, Vivian Bomar (Jerry) of Norfolk, NE.
Cousin Lee Paradise of NY, Nephew Robert Farrior (Carol) of Waterford. Granddaughters Katherine Silvia (Frank), Sharon Reagan, Leigh Monk (Randy) of Niantic. Three great grandchildren Stephen, Frank and Kelly.
Two great great grandchildren Patra and Jacoby. One great great great grandson Kellyn. Herschel is also survived by his special friend Virginia Littlefield.
They loved going on senior bus trips, dinning out, going to the movies and family gatherings. Mostly they enjoyed each other’s company. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucy; his brothers Charles and David Paradise; and a sister, Bernice (Betty) Marchbanks.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave, Niantic. Interment with military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA at a later date.
