OBITUARY Hilda Ethel Figgins February 5, 1922 – January 12, 2019 Feb. 5, 1922 – Jan. 12, 2019 Hilda Ethel was born on February 5, 1922 to Lester C. Moore and Rana House Moore in the tiny town of Squirrel, ID, in the middle of a blizzard.
She left us quietly in her sleep on Saturday, January 12, 2019, having been surrounded by family for the years and weeks leading up to her passing. She is preceded in death by five brothers; as well as her husband of 68 years, Norman Kenneth Figgins, who passed in 2014. Hilda is survived by “kid sister”, Phyllis; three children: Roger Figgins, Janet Mitchell, Dick Figgins, their partners in life; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and community who loved and knew her.
Hilda lived through nearly a century’s worth of change that took her from a one-room schoolhouse in a rural town, into a metropolitan world full of high tech and other advances. Throughout her life, she spent much of her time giving back. She served as an adviser of the Bluebirds, Campfire and Horizon Clubs for over a decade.
She was an active member of Daughters of the Nile and Badoura Club within the Masonic Organization and spent much of her time crafting things for herself and others, as well as frequently visiting with home-bound people in the community. She always found joy in bringing a smile to other people. From 1968 – 2001 she was co-owner and bookkeeper of Dick Nite Spoons, alongside her husband, Kenneth.
Together they grew the small business into a much larger nationwide brand. She was an avid gardener. She spent hours tending her flowers, shrubs, fruits and vegetables, and when the seasons were done, you would find her in the kitchen, canning or baking with everything she had grown.
Having lived through the Depression, nothing went to waste (and nobody left hungry). She came from a time when if you could make it, you didn’t buy it, and for years she made clothes for her daughter and grandchildren, as well as handmade afghans and blankets for her family as keepsakes. Hilda had an unshakable faith.
She often expressed how excited she was to go home to God and her family and spoke of being at peace with her life coming to end. In lieu of flowers, Hilda would like donations to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. This was a cause close to both she and Kenneth’s hearts.
Memorial Service will be held at Purdy and Walters Floral Hills, Lynnwood, WA on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Final resting place will be Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA.
