OBITUARY Hubert A. “Chico” Hernandez May 26, 1938 – August 23, 2018 Hubert A (“Chico”) Hernandez went peacefully into the presence of Our Lord on August 23, 2018. He was 80. Born in Sugar Land, TX, to Hubert S Hernandez and Sally Alva, he grew up in Galveston, attended Texas A&M and Sam Houston, and made a career building refineries and power plants in and around the Gulf area, and others.

In EPC parlance, he was the “Procurement Man,” invariably delivering projects under budget and ahead of schedule. “The spec better be right,” said management to the engineers, “because Chico will have it there before the ink dries”. Still, his best times, he said, were coaching youth baseball and football—in Joliet IL, Alvin TX, and several venues in and around Lakeland FL.

He was a founding member of the Lakeland Patriots football league, and he coached at the Catholic Santa Fe High when another school offered him more (you didn’t say “no” to Sister Julie, he said). He leaves his wife, Shiela; his sister, Gloria; his children, John Theodore (J.T.) Hernandez (deceased), Melissa Pannel, Raquel Sasyn, Eva Elizabeth Hernandez, David Samuel Hernandez, Hubert A “Chico” Hernandez Jr., and Russell Hernandez; his cousins, Carmen, Mary Lou, and Hortense; numerous other relatives; and too many friends to list.
