Ignacio Cantu II, age 96 of Saginaw passed away May 7, 2019 at Great Lakes Rehab Center in Saginaw. The son of the late Ignacio and Santos Cantu, Ignacio was born November 18, 1922 in Matamoro, Tamaulipal, Mexico. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was part of the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion of mainland Europe and his squad fought for control of Normandy Beach in France. Following his discharge from the Army on December 9, 1945, Ignacio returned to Texas where he later married Maria Trevino on August 22, 1947 and they later made their home in Saginaw. Mr. Cantu was employed by Saginaw Products as a welder for many years prior to his retirement.
He had been a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church for many years and was a member of the VFW Post 9931 in Bridgeport. He is survived by his wife Maria; 7 children, Benito (Sylvia) Cantu, Lou Cantu, Javier Cantu, Aurora Barron, Ignacio (Kim) Cantu III, Alicia (Dan) Duval, and Marta (Chris) Sanchez; 1 son-in-law, Robert Renteria; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings, Jose Cantu, Maria Gonzalez, Berta Garcia, and Cleotilde Trevino; and many nieces and nephews including Adelaido Cantu and Rosa Fulgencio. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Renteria; and infant child, and 7 brothers and sisters, and by a grandson Benito Ignacio Cantu in 2018.
Funeral Service will take place 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Cederberg-Brietzke Funeral Home of Saginaw. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until time of service. Full military honors will be accorded to Mr. Cantu, Interment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery next week.
