Iris Mae Smith, 87, of Newton died on Monday, December 10, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a luncheon at the funeral home.

Memorials to Iris’ family may be left at the funeral home. Iris, the daughter of William and Loucreata (Robinson) Seals, was born on August 22, 1931 in Centerville. She grew up and attended schools in Mystic.

On December 23, 1950, Iris was united in marriage with Elmer Salasberry in Missouri. Shortly after, they made their home in Newton where Iris would live the rest of her life. Iris worked as a machine operator at Honeycorr for 25 years, retiring in 1993.

Following Elmer’s death, Iris was married to Jack Smith on February 4, 1993 in Newton. She was a member of TOPS, Iowa 207 Union, and AFL-CIO. Iris enjoyed ceramics and reading and attended Metz Community Church.

Those left to honor Iris’ memory are her children, Joyce Breckenridge (Tom McGinnis) of Fairfax, Joleen (John) Crawford of Newton, David Salasberry of Des Moines, Brenda (Dale) Van Hoose of Spring, Texas, and Randy (Shelly) Salasberry of Newton; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her sister, Faith Engle of Centerville; and sister-in-law, Louise Seals of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Elmer Salasberry; second husband, Jack Smith; brothers, Cela and Ora Seals; sister, Shirley Bills; and son-in-law, Steve Breckenridge.
