CARLSEN, IVAR CARLO, NORWEGIAN WAR SAILOR. age 98, formerly of the Scandinavian Living Center in West Newton, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, May 27 at Belmont Manor Nursing Home. Born on September 9, 1919 in Sandefjord, Norway, he spent fifty years on board ships across the seven seas.

He sailed as a merchant mariner on Norwegian ships during World War II and thus is now recognized, celebrated and decorated as a War Sailor. Later he served with the US Army Transport in the Western Pacific and then for many years he captained tankers for Gulf Oil. He was a sea captain through and through.

Ivar loved playing chess and since he played goalie for soccer teams in his youth, later in life he enjoyed watching soccer on tv. He collected stamps from around the world and occasionally he would play his violin. He read mysteries and books about the sea.

He loved to walk, he loved to be outside and he loved the ocean. He loved his family. He met Ilse Lange in Manila after World War II and they married in 1948.

Ivar is survived by his son Carl, daughter-in-law Susan and granddaughter Lindsey of Winchester, his nephews Richard and Bruce Lange of Columbus, Ohio and his Norwegian nieces Ase Carlsen, Britten Gulliksen and Gert Isaksen and their families. A day of remembrance will be observed at the Carlsen home on Sunday from noon until eight. Donations in Ivar’s memory may be sent to The Scandinavian Living Center 206 Waltham St., West Newton MA 02465.
