Obituary for Mr. James Cloyd Stuebner James Cloyd Stueber, age 86, passed away on May 8, 2018 in Minnetonka, MN after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on December 15, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA to Erwin August and Frances Quinn Stuebner. Jim graduated from the Haverford School in 1949 and continued onto Dartmouth College, where he earned an AB in English in 1953.

While at Dartmouth, he participated in the Glee Club and was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After college, Jim enlisted in the army for two years during the Korean War era achieving the rank of sergeant. He was based at Fort Lewis near Tacoma, WA and received an honorable discharge in 1955.

After leaving the Army, Jim began his career selling fiberglass panels with Rohm and Haas in Chicago, IL before being transferred to Minneapolis, MN in 1955. In the early 1960s, Jim started his own company, called Structural Plastics. The company manufactured plastic panels used for various building purposes.

One of Jim’s greatest accomplishments was building the Minnesota Pavilion for the New York World’s Fair in 1964. In the late 1960s, Jim ventured into real estate development, purchasing land for an industrial and office park in Brooklyn Park, MN. He founded Northland Development and Stuebner Properties.

Jim was active in the National Association of Independent Office Parks (NAIOP), serving as its national chairman in 1982. Jim’s proudest moment was developing and opening the Northland Inn, an all-suite hotel and conference center. He retired in 2008.

An avid sailor since his youth, Jim enjoyed sailing with his family on Lake Minnetonka, Lake Superior and in the Virgin Islands. He also enjoyed captaining his Chris Craft cruiser on the Mississippi River and Lake Minnetonka. Jim loved music and had a beautiful baritone voice.

He sang in the Bach Society for many years in the 1980s and 1990s and was a long-time member of the choir at St. David’s Episcopal in Minnetonka, MN. Since 2011, Jim lived at Legacy Care Home in Minnetonka, MN where the professional staff and residents welcomed “Jimmy” as part of their family. Jim’s survivors extend their deepest gratitude for their great care and support.

Jim is survived by his first wife of thirty-four years Diane (Walker), and their four children, Kathy (Michael) of Plymouth, MN, Steve (Wendy) of Boise, ID, Jim (Bryn) of Los Altos, CA, Susan (Amanda) of New London, NH; his second wife, Susan (Peterson) and their daughter Elizabeth (Huntington Beach, CA); six grandchildren and one great grandchild; and his siblings, Anne (Pete) Damon of Middletown, RI, Mary Coonen of Mondragon, France, and Erwin (Jane) Stuebner of Williamstown, MA. A private burial service will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to an open house, Monday, May 14 from 3:00-5:00 PM at the Terrace Activity Room, Beacon Hill, 5330 Beacon Hill Road, Minnetonka, MN 55345.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. David’s Episcopal Church in Minnetonka, MN or the Alzheimer’s Association.
