James M. Duffy of Whiting, Manchester Township, died Wednesday May 23 at Holiday Care Center in Toms River. He was 85. He was born in Elizabeth to Hannah and James Duffy, who had emigrated from Donegal, Ireland.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Alice, brothers Robert, John and Joseph, and sisters Catherine Reilley and Sr. Maria Bernadette Duffy, S.C. He is survived by brothers Edward of Elizabeth and Donald (also known as Daniel) of Newark,Delaware, sisters Ann Ehrhard and Grace Maher of Lakewood, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. Upon graduation from St. Mary’s H.S. in Elizabeth, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy; he was honorably discharged in 1956.

He served aboard the U.S.S. Amphion out of Norfolk,Va. as a electrical repairman, making many ports of call on the East Coast and in the Caribbean. Jimmy was a natural and gifted musician who played many instruments.

He was a bagpiper with the Sarsfield Irish Pipe Band with whom he was a regular in many St. Patrick’s Day Parades. A keen bowler, he bowled for the Silver Ridge Park team in Toms River while he lived there, and for several years after moving to Whiting. Arrangements are by Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, E St. George Avenue,Linden.

Viewing on Saturday June 2, 8:30-10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph the Carpenter Church, E Third Avenue, Roselle. Interment at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Inman Avenue, Colonia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, P.O. Box 476, Convent Station,NJ 07961-0476.
