Bud (James Handy) Lowe was born Feb. 23, 1926 in Pine Bluff Arkansas to Garland and Verna Simpson Lowe and went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2018. He was 92 years old.
Bud grew up during the depression which shaped his life in many ways. Living up to his middle name, he was handy. He could fix just about anything that came his way.
He always found a creative solution to every problem he faced, and he knew the value of hard work and the value of a dollar. He was the backbone of his family and never failed to give good advice and big hugs. He never turned down an opportunity to babysit his grandkids, grand nieces and nephews.
He was always there when you needed him. He treasured being Popo and Uncle Buddy. Bud’s hobby was helping people by being the hands and feet of Jesus.
He never refused anyone in need. His life is a litany of good deeds. He loved feeding the hungry and was a volunteer cook at Joy Junction in Albuquerque.
When he moved to Carlsbad he continued to feed the hungry at the soup kitchen. His favorite job cooking was feeding the youth at First Baptist Church a hearty breakfast on Friday mornings. He also prepared and served many bereavement meals for his church family.
He loved his country. On his 16th birthday he joined the navy and went off to fight in World War Two. When the war ended he was 20 years old and proud to be a veteran.
It was in the navy that he learned to tie every knot known to man. To his friends and family his knots were legendary and he could secure any load. On August 15, 1948 he married Beatrice Baca Bergamo, a widow raising a young son.
His dream had come true and he had his own little family. His family was completed with the birth of daughter Cheryl. Bea passed away in 1975 after a long bout with cancer.
In the summer of 1992 he went to help a widowed neighbor in need. As a thank you she baked him a cherry pie, and the rest is history. He married Vana Challstrom on November 14, 1992.
They had celebrated 25 years together at the time of his passing. He was a master prankster and no one was immune from his pranks! He once put a small bull snake in a donut box and left it on the breakfast table for his family to discover.
He also had an endearing nick name for all those people he loved. Bud was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Garland Lowe, grandson Dean Lewis and his Queen Bea. Those left to mourn his passing and celebrate treasured memories is his wife Vana Lowe, daughter Cheryl Caraway and her husband John, step son Richard Bergamo.
Sister Billie Isaacson, her husband Glen and their children Beverly, Kay and Lynn. Grand children, John Ross and Katy Caraway, and Cyndi Leigh Applebaum. Great grandchildren, Truitt Hess, Carter and London Caraway, Paul and Joseph Applebaum.
He maintained a close relationship with Bea’s family to the very end. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 27, 2018 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Land officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
