Obituary for James H. Hardie James Hiller Hardie Jr. Died peacefully at home on April 8, 2018, surrounded by family. Jim was born on December 1, 1929 to Elizabeth Alcorn Hardie and James H. Hardie. He attended Shady Side Academy and graduated Cum Laude in 1947.

He was a graduate of Princeton University in 1951, and Harvard Law in 1954. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar Association in 1954, and spent his entire legal career as a corporate lawyer at the Reed Smith law firm where he served for many years as Head of the Corporate Group and member of the Executive Committee. During his tenure at Reed Smith he advised prominent local companies including Gulf Oil, Mine Safety Appliances and many others.

He also provided legal advice and served on the Board of Directors of Michael Baker Jr. Inc, National Valve and Manufacturing Company, United Refining Company, Respironics, and Oce-USA. Jim was an ardent supporter of Pittsburgh and loved the ballet. He served for many years on the Board of Trustees of the Pittsburgh Ballet.

He also served as the President of the Board of Trustees of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania for multiple terms. Jim was very active and adventurous, and loved to take his wife and 5 children, along with many friends, nieces and nephews, on extended canoeing trips in the wilds of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. These trips provided many unforgettable experiences and memories for all involved.

Jim is survived by Frances, his wife of 65 years; and his children, J. Hiller Hardie, Andrew Hardie, Michael Hardie and Janet Harvey: and 10 grandchildren. Jim was pre-deceased by his daughter Rachel Share. He is survived by his brothers, W. Logan Hardie and Thomas Todd and sister Elizabeth Hardie Forrest (Patsy).

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Pittsburgh Ballet and Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be help on Sunday, April 22 at 1PM at Beechwood Farm Nature Reserve, 614 Dorseyville Road. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of James H.
