James Monroe Alston Sr. (Jimmy), was born on June 1, 1950 in Neptune NJ and was a loving son, one of three children, to the late William and Della Rice. On Saturday January 19, 2019 at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel NJ, James transitioned from this earthly life to be with the Lord. James was raised in Matawan NJ, and as a child attended 2nd Baptist Church of Matawan with his beloved family.
He received his education through the Matawan Regional school system. While in school he was a star athlete; his talent well known by his peers on the football field and track. James graduated high school in 1968 and went on to further his education at Virginia State University on a track and field scholarship.
Following his time in Virginia, James went on to receive his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Brookdale College. He enrolled and graduated from the police academy of Sea Girt in 1973; working vigorously throughout Monmouth County in the Prosecutor’s Office and the Bayshore Task Force. He was known by many as “Super Cop”.
James dedicated four decades of his life to the Matawan Police Department, beginning in 1974. He worked tirelessly throughout the years beginning as a dispatcher, moving up through the ranks from patrolman, to Detective, Sgt. Detective, Lieutenant, Captain, rightfully earning the position of Matawan’s very first African American chief in 2008.
James’ pride for helping the people of Matawan along with countless others was greatly admired by all. He was known to be the calm in a storm of chaos; and was always sought out to be the solution to any problem. To say he was the best of his profession is an understatement.
The love he had for serving the community played a large role when influencing three of his children to choose their career path, and who continue to proudly represent the uniformed services. James was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. His pride and joy, without a doubt, were his children.
He was the backbone of his family and never hesitated to provide love, comfort, or advice when it was needed. A strong-willed man, James was known well for his deep voice-which could be comforting or terrifying-depending on the situation-and for his firm handshake. James had a love for Motown classics played on vinyl, late night snacking, and old western movies.
Although he has left the physical realm, his loving, strong spirit will always be with us. He will truly be missed. James was predeceased by his beloved parents, William and Della Rice; his sister, Ruth Butler; and his nephew Michael S. Butler.
He leaves to cherish his memories-his loving wife of 30 years, Lisa Alston, his brother, Robert L. Alston (wife, Venecia); his eldest children from his previous marriage to Sheila Wilkins: James Jr. (fiancée, Nicole), and Angela. His four younger children: William, Chayce (wife, Felicia Geran), John, and David; his grandchildren Arianna, Neko, and Brielle; his niece Debora Nelson; and his nephews Eric Butler and Braxton Alston; along with a host of loving friends and family members. Lovingly submitted by the family.
