Obituary for Janet R. “Jan” Childs Janet Rita “Jan” Childs, age 92, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away on Monday, October 8, 2018, at Franciscan Health, Indianapolis. Jan was born in Knox, Indiana on January 26, 1926, the daughter of James P. and Gertrude (Gilsinger) Falvey. Jan was a graduate of Knox High School and attended St. Mary’s at Notre Dame and Purdue University.

On August 29, 1946, in Knox, Indiana Jan married Ralph E. “Bob” Childs. Jan and Bob moved to Rensselaer in 1948, also having lived for a short time in Niles, Michigan. They were the parents of six children, Tim (Bonnie) Childs of Granger, IN, Tom Childs of Lawrence, MI, Carol Childs of Mahomet, IL, Susie Canaday of Rensselaer, IN, Patrick Childs of Lawrence, IN and the late Kevin John Childs.

Jan was a mother and homemaker who deeply loved and cherished her family. She was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Women’s Prayer Group in Rensselaer. Jan was a former Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader.

She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Tri-Kappa Sorority in Rensselaer. Jan and Bob began wintering in Naples, Florida in 1982 and enjoyed their time there. While living in Naples she attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Jan will be missed dearly by her loving children and family. Also surviving are grandchildren Brian (Janet) Childs, Matt (Jamee) Childs, Bob Childs, Amanda Childs, Sarah Childs, Tim (Jamie) Childs, Kate (Paul) Mantz, Josh (Dana) Canaday, Elizabeth (David) Greathouse, Abby (Charlie) Mulligan and Mike (Amber) Berkes, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, her sister, Joan Carlson of Constantine, MI and brother Tom Falvey of Ocala, FL and numerous nieces and nephews. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, James and Gertrude Falvey, her husband Bob on January 18, 2003, son Kevin, sisters Jean Childs and Joyce Cleveland, and brothers Bill and Ken Falvey.

Friends will be received at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer with Fr. Don Davison officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Rensselaer.
