Jerry Donald Thacker February 28, 1937 – February 15, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Jerry Donald Thacker, 81, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2019 at his home in University Place, WA. Jerry was born February 28, 1937 in Portsmouth, OH to James and Mary Thacker. Jerry graduated from high school in 1956 from Port Townsend, WA, earning all state honors in football, basketball and baseball.

Jerry attended the University of Puget Sound on a football scholarship earning a bachelor’s degree in 1961 after lettering in football (4), baseball (4), and basketball (2). Jerry still holds the record for the longest touchdown pass play in 1960 to Ed Tingstad. Jerry married his first wife and had two daughters, Ronelle and Tracie.

He earned his master’s degree in education in 1970 and went on to teach while coaching football and baseball. In 1978, while at Orting High School, he was named the Pierce County Coach of the Year. In 1992, Jerry married his second wife, Minh, and had a son Robert.

Jerry played softball for several years with the Heidelberg slow-pitch team that won seven straight Northwest championships. In 2005, he won a slow-pitch national title in the master’s rank and in 2006 he was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame as well as his Heidelberg team in 2016. Jerry is survived by his wife, Minh, together for 31 years and his children Ronelle Lockwood of University Place, WA; Tracie Thacker of Des Moines, WA; Robert Thacker of University Place, WA; step-son John Burleigh of Vancouver, WA, step-daughter Karen Wacker of Phoenix, AZ; step-son Jeff Burleigh of Redmond, WA; step-daughter Michelle Burleigh-Long of Phoenix, AZ, and 14 grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and step-son Daniel. A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm on February 23, 2019 at STAR Center Community Center 3873 S. 66th St. Tacoma, WA 98409.
