Jerry Thoms February 27, 1937 – February 28, 2019 Jerry D. Thoms, 82 of Sioux City, Iowa and formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Unity Point – St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all on Monday, March 4, 2019 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be expressed to the family through www. rexwinkelfh.com.

Jerry Dean Thoms was born on February 27, 1937 to Elmer and Florence (Brown) Thoms in Plymouth County, Iowa. Jerry was raised on the family farm and attended school in Le Mars until 11th grade. At age 17, Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy on July 6, 1954.

He served on the USS Northhampton (CLC-1) during the Korean Conflict. Jerry was honorably discharged on December 5, 1957. Jerry returned to Le Mars where he began working at the Globe Post (now known as the Le Mars Daily Sentinel).

Jerry was united in marriage to Virginia Steenhoven on February 7, 1958. Jerry and Virginia moved a few years later to a farm where Jerry farmed full time until 1975. They then moved in town and Jerry began working for Wells Dairy.

Virginia passed away on April 13, 1997. Jerry worked at Wells Dairy until 1998 when he retired. During his retirement he would occasionally help local farmers with field work and local dealerships in driving cars to other locations.

On October 22, 2005, Jerry was united in marriage to Hester (Lubben) Hatfield and they made their home in Sioux City, Iowa. Jerry was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He loved to go fishing, hunting, and camping.

He enjoyed playing pinochle; Jerry and Virginia played in a card club for many years. In his adult years he enjoyed playing slow pitch softball in Le Mars. Jerry is survived by his wife, Hester; children: Roy (Cindy) Thoms of Le Mars, Todd (Sherry) Thoms of Monument, CO, and Staci (Bradley) Kraft of Le Mars; step children: Jon Hatfield of Sioux City, and Julie (Don) Donaldson of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Jessica, Travis, Amber, Tylor, Autum, Kayla, Rachel, Danielle, and Brandon; step grandchildren: Stephanie, Shay, Cody, Ethan, and Kelsey; 14 great grandchildren and one on the way; 1 step great grandchild; sister, Janice Heidbrink of Le Mars; sister in law, Audrey (Arnis) Jacobsen of Chicago, IL; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; great grandson, Linkin; sister, Mary (Bob) Harrison; and brother in law, Wesley Heidbrink.
