Pageland, SC On Saturday, June 23, 2018, Mrs. Jessie Mangum Pigg’s work on earth was done. Her devoted family was with her as she peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior forever. Jessie, age 96, was born on September 4, 1921 to the late D.W. and Ella Mills Mangum.
She grew up on a farm in Zion Community, graduated from Geyer’s Business College, took a position in the business department at Monroe Hardware and then later worked at A.M. Moore Hardware in Pageland. In 1947, she married Henry David Pigg, and thus began her life as a nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her greatest joy came from serving her family.
She particularly loved to prepare fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden for all to enjoy. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren absolutley loved her hoecakes, stickies, and sweet potato pies and Maw Maw always made plenty to share. Mrs. Pigg was a life-long member of Zion United Methodist Church.
From her childhood, Zion was the gathering place for her community and the times she spent there in fellowship with her family, her friends, and her Lord were a very important part of her life. She was honored to serve as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, church treasurer, and in any other position where she was needed. She loved her Lord and her church family with all of her heart.
In addition to her parents, Jessie was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry David Pigg, Sr.; granddaughter, Justine (Tina) Catoe; great-granddaughter, Sarah Ashley Rollings; and all ten of her siblings, Thelma Mangum, Mary Mangum, Nettie Mangum Kirkley, Sally Mangum Jordan, Myrtle Mangum Sullivan, Margie Mangum Vick, Jake Mangum, Theron Mangum, Lenson Mangum and Melvin Mangum. Those left to celebrate and remember a life well lived include her son, Henry David Pigg, Jr. (Brenda), daughters, Louella Pigg Catoe (Joe), Jane Pigg Johnson (Dwight), and Mary Beth Pigg Smith; grandchildren, Kym Catoe Rollings (Todd), Bredae Pigg Graves, Henry David Pigg, III, Megan Johnson Harris (David), Steven Lawson Smith, Gina Johnson Howard (Jeff) and Celeste Johnson Young (Frank); great-grandchildren, Joseph, John Ashley, Ella, Matthew, and Paul Rollings, Daniel and Molly Graves, Claire and Paul Howard and Alexandria and Mary Ellen Young; and many nieces and nephews. She will live on in our hearts inspiring us all to be the best that we can be.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church, with Pastor Carl Ritter and Pastor Athon Arant officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Following the graveside service, the family will visit with friends in Zion Hall and at other times at the home of Joe and Louella Catoe.
