Joan M. Ferris August 18, 1934 – January 28, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Joan M. Ferris 84, Brownsburg, passed away Jan. 28, 2019. Born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota on August 18, 1934 to Oliver and Alma Oftelie, the fourth of nine children.

Later moved to Indiana to live with her sister Helorise at 17 and graduated from Washington High School in ‘51. She married Howard on March 29, 1952, and settled in Indianapolis to start a family. Worked and retired as a welder for Allisons and General Motors.

A member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, she later attended Messiah Lutheran Church. Joan was an avid gardener, quilter, needle-pointer, traveler, bowler and euchre player. A lover of animals and all things sports related.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Martin Ferris, sons David and Mark Ferris, and great grandchild Jack Oliver Ferris. Survivors include children Paul Ferris and Laura Such; brothers Dale Oftelie and Winton Oftelie; sister Gladys Hammernes; 10 grandchildren including Danielle Thomas, Matthew Ferris (Sara), Leslie Montes (Enrique), David Ferris (Christine), Emily Farley (Frank), Adam Ferris (Kathleen), Aaron Ferris (Melissa); Jason Ferris; Melissa Mendel (Dustin) and Cassondra Such; 21 beautiful great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm Monday Feb.

4 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with funeral services there at 1pm. Burial will be in Brownsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.
