Joan Marie Rice, R.N., age 82, formerly of Norwell, Ma, Montserrat, WI and Portland, Maine passed away on December 10, 2018 after lengthy illness. Joan was the daughter of the late William and Anna Welch (Jacobs). She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Maureen DuCrest, Kathleen McDonald, her husband Brian, Annie McKnight her, husband Marty and is predeceased by her son Brendan Rice.

Joan is also a sister to Bill Welch and his wife Maureen, Portland Maine and is predeceased by her sister Carolann Meehan. Joan had seven grandchildren Morgan, Danny, Julia and Aidan McDonald, Patrick Noel and Cailei DuCrest and Glenn McKnight. She will sadly missed by her nieces, nephews and wider family circle.

Joan graduated from New England Deaconess School of Nursing in 1956 and was a dedicated registered nurse for over 40 years in which she held post at South Shore Hospital and the American Red Cross. Throughout Joan’s life she enjoyed travelling, sunny days in Montserrat and spending summers on Cape Cod. She loved to play tennis, dancing and she never hesitated to boast about her grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joan’s life on December 21, 2018 during a visiting hour at 10:30 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central St. (off Rt. 123, near State Police Barracks), Norwell Center, MA. 02061 followed by ceremony at 11:30 am in the funeral home.

Joan will be interred beside her son Brendan at Washington St. Cemetery, Norwell MA. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Jimmy Fund in the name of Brendan Rice.
