Joan’s Obituary Joan M. Olree, age 76, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods from complications of kidney disease. She was born December 28, 1942 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Martin and Gertrude (Decker) Plooy. Joan graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 1964; on August 15th, of that same year, she married Don Olree.

They made their home in the Detroit area for 8 years and then moved to Kalamazoo where they lived for over 34 years. Following retirement, Joan and Don moved to their home on the Muskegon River. Joan had a varied and celebrated nursing career.

She worked as a RN at several different hospitals and taught at a college level on two occasions. Eventually she joined the Upjohn Corporation, which ultimately became a part of Pfizer. She initially worked in occupational health, then technical writing and finally as a data quality manager for clinical trials.

Joan had to retire in 1994 for health reasons, however while employed at Upjohn, Joan received the prestigious Upjohn Award. Joan was an active member of the United Church of Big Rapids. She loved being on the river and in her garden.

Caring for dogs, cats, horses and cows always made Joan happy. Joan’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Mercy Health St. Mary’s in Grand Rapids, Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Byron Center and Dr. Jean Thomas for the wonderful care given to their wife, mother and grandmother. Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years and 9 months, Donald of Newaygo; two children, Christine Olree of Ada, Suzanne (Marc) Coulam of Fort Worth, TX; two granddaughters, Ashley Werkema, Chloe Werkema; one niece and two nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service will take place 12:00 p.m. (noon) Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the United Church in Big Rapids with Pastor J. T. Hills officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church.
