OBITUARY Joanne A. Schneider August 10, 1933 – September 26, 2018 Play Tribute Movie Joanne Alvilda Schneider, 85, of Houston, passed gently into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. A Celebration of Life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston. A reception with light refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

Joanne was born in Kitsap County of Washington State during the “Great Depression” and grew up in a log cabin in Paulsbo, Washington. She enjoyed digging for clams and many clam bakes on the beach. The family moved to Bremerton, Washington where they took frequent ferry rides across Puget Sound to Seattle, Washington.

Proud of her heritage, Joanie was a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR). After high school “Joanie” attended the University of Washington where she joined the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Many of her sorority sisters became lifelong friends with whom she kept in touch.

It was there in her economics class that Joanie met the love of her life, Joseph Michael “Mike” Schneider. After marrying in 1955, they moved to California and later welcomed their daughter Suzanne, and then their son Greg. In 1969 the family moved to New Jersey for a brief time and welcomed their son Paul Joseph, days before moving the family once again.

This time the Schneider family headed south and made Houston, Texas where they remained. In Houston, Joanie was a devoted wife and mother and was very active in the lives of her children. She also worked outside the home and found time to volunteer, play-bridge, scrapbook and enjoyed bowling on leagues with Mike.

Joanie was an active member of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church including Prayer Pals and alter guild. She and Mike taught Bible study and Sunday school and enjoyed getting together with friends of the Retired Old Christian Kids (ROCK) group. After retirement Joanie and Mike traveled extensively, taking cruises and visiting as many foreign countries as possible.

Joanie enjoyed meticulously cataloging all of their trips with photographs, memories and information. While they thoroughly enjoyed their travels, they enjoyed their grandchildren even more! After Mike’s death in 2013, Joanie moved to Eagle’s Trace Retirement Community in Houston and life began again.

She enjoyed line dancing, Wii bowling, wine club, travel trips, and volunteering at Bayou Vista Memory Care facility at Eagle’s Trace. In 2017, Joanie became a resident of the memory care facility and lived the remainder of her life. Joanie was welcomed into heaven and reunited with her parents; her husband, Mike; and son Paul, who preceded her in death.

Left to cherish and carry on her memory is her daughter, Suzanne Sherman and husband, Louis of Katy; and her son, Greg Schneider and wife, Mary of Houston; and her beloved grandchildren , Michael Henry and Julia Rose Hecht of Katy, and Gretchen Grace, Abigail Anne, Emmeline Elizabeth, and Sophie Skye Schneider of Houston, who will miss their “Grandma Jo” very much. The family extends their thanks and deep appreciation to the incredible staffs and fabulous aids at Magnolia Way and Eagle’s Trace Retirement Community for the activities, tireless devotion, and loving care Joanie received. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Joanie’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.
