Joe’s Obituary Joseph Henry “Joe” Owens, 64, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at MUSC Health Marion Medical Center. He was born on January 24, 1955 in Marion County, a son of the late Daniel Lewis Owens and Margaret Smith Owens Morris. Joe had retired from Beneteau after 28 years of service.

Following his retirement, he was able to focus on his family and his horses. Joe made many friends through his time spent with his horses. He enjoyed barrel racing, horse races and cruising the river in his father-in-law’s boat.

His greatest love, however were his girls, Carla, his wife of 29 years and his daughter, Anna. He was a member of Gapway Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by a brother, Daniel Lewis Owens, a brother-in-law, Tom Bessetti, and his father-in-law, Winston Buffkin.

Joe is survived by his mother, Margaret Smith Owens Morris, his wife, Carla Buffkin Owens, two daughters, Anna Marie Owens (Tailor Godwin) all of Mullins and Kelli Joanna Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; a brother, Thomas Mitchell Owens (Terry) of Florence; a sister, Lynn Owens Bessetti of Mullins, one grandson, Elijah Nelson, a sister-in-law, Gayle Pitts of Camden; brother-in-laws, Ricky Buffkin (Gwen) of Mullins and Johnny George of Charlotte, NC, and his most faithful companion, Roy l. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May, 6, 2019 in the chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Steve Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Red Hill Memorial Gardens.
