John Bernard Schreiber III He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lucy nee Whitney. His children John B. (Jennifer) Schreiber IV, Amanda Schreiber, and Adam Schreiber. His grandchildren Sullivan and Lachlan Schreiber.
His siblings Randy S. Schreiber and Bruce C. (Marie) Schreiber and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents John Bernard Schreiber II and Joan Brown Schreiber. John’s life was devoted to work, family, and community.
He began his career in the family business, M.L. Ensminger, a general construction contracting firm. Later he moved into his own consulting business, Schreiber Construction Planning. Two projects were particularly gratifying to him: renovating Jubilee Village–an Outreach Community Ministries project, and helping to build a new church for the Pullman Presbyterian Church congregation in Chicago, Illinois.
In 2002, he began a teaching career, teaching construction management at Oakton Community College in Skokie. John had a lifelong passion for history. In 2006, he earned his Master’s Degree in military history from Norwich University, Vermont.
Most recently, he used his mastery of history to teach at College of DuPage in their Lifetime Learning curriculum. John’s love for family prompted him to be active in the YMCA’s Indian Guide/Princess program and Boy Scout Troop 45. He loved camping with his family and friends, and took great pleasure in joining his friends from Troop 45 on several hiking trips to national parks.
His children will remember long conversations with their Dad about history, rock n’ roll, family heritage, politics, and values. John’s family first moved to Glen Ellyn just prior to John entering kindergarten. He developed a devotion for Glen Ellyn’s history, and served many years on the village’s Historic Sites Committee, fighting to preserve significant properties.
He was an active member in the DuPage County Republican Party, serving as a Precinct Committeeman. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on the building committee during their renovation. He was a great storyteller who LOVED history.
His love of history embraced a deep regard for Glen Ellyn’s historic past, military history in which he created and collected military items, and at times focusing on Chicago history such as crime and politics and architecture as well. He spent his free time fishing, watching the Cubs, reading, enjoying a good cigar and a thermos of coffee. Words cannot summarize the life of a man we all loved so much, but we want to take the time to thank everyone who cared for him and held him in their prayers over the last months.
