John “Bill” Severance June 17, 1925 – January 30, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card John “Bill” William Severance was born the oldest of four sons to RJ and Mae Severance on June 17, 1925 in Beloit, Kansas. He passed at the age of 93 years old on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the Mitchell County Hospital. He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Virginia Severance.

To this union three daughters also survive – Anita (Jim) Oelke of Hoxie, KS, Melanie (Larry) Miltner of Medicine Lodge, KS, and Susan (Dale) Engelbert of Norton, KS. Among his family are eight grandchildren – Eva (Brian) Gavin, Alicia (Mike) Sanders, Jessica (Joe) Ohler, Justin (Rylee) Miltner, Brent Engelbert, Zane (Amy) Engelbert, Elise (Trevis) Rottler, and Bryce (Emily) Engelbert. Also among his family are 22 great grandchildren – Kenny, Isiah, Will, and Beren Gavin, Victoria McFarland, Allison and Chris Sanders, Davis, Darcie, and Aubry Miltner, Emma and Elizabeth Ohler, Dalton, Emily, and Madelyn Engelbert, Turner, Ava, Dylan, and Ella Engelbert, Emmery and Kai Rottler, and Cadyn Engelbert.

And, finally among his family is the great-great granddaughter, Reese McFarland. He has three brothers and wives that also survive him – Robert “Bob” and MaryAnn Severance of Beloit, Wilford and Mary Severance of Pueblo, CO, and Harold and Anne Severance of Concordia, KS; sisters-in-law, Beverly Moss, Evalyn Adams, and Joan Elder; brother-in-law, Dan and wife Berta Moss; and many nieces and nephews. Bill worked very hard throughout his life.

His parents owned a dairy and was a young man, the “boys” would deliver milk throughout Beloit. Between his last two years of high school, he was inducted in the Navy at the age of 19. He was the ship’s cook on the USS LST 590 for over two years in WWII.

After WWII, he went back to finish high school in Beloit, and graduated in 1947. The next year, he married Virginia Moss and eventually settled on a farm southwest of Beloit. He was a farmer, and raised livestock.

His pride and joy was raising sheep and he won numerous awards for his hard work. They moved to town and he worked for Solomon Valley Feedlot and Krier Electric. He loved to work and worked into his 80’s, shingling their house, replacing boards in the porch, and snow removal for neighbors and friends without cost was some of his activities.

He was active in the community, serving as a county commissioner, fair board member, and serving as church elder and deacon. He was active in serving meals for the VFW and American Legion, and was an avid sports supporter of Beloit. He was a very hard worker and a generous person to many people.

He loved his country, his church, his family, and his community. We want to thank his wonderful neighbors, family, and friends for their support during this journey. Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, February 6 at the Beloit First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 1-6 PM Tuesday, February 5 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church, Mitchell County Historical Society, or Hilltop Lodge. Per his wishes, the casket will remain closed.
