Obituary for John G. Cummings John G. Cummings entered into eternal rest on January 1, 2019. He was born in Detroit on January 21, 1930, the second of five sons to Patrick and Aileen Cummings. John was a 1948 graduate of the University of Detroit High School.

John served his country in the U.S. Army, First Calvary Division from 1951 to 1954, seeing action in the Korean conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. While stationed at Fort McClellan in Anniston Alabama he met Sara Roberts.

They were married on June 25th, 1955. Sara preceded John in death on October 3, 2015 after 60 years of marriage. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Philosophy, John went on to earn his law degree from the University of Detroit College of Law, graduating Magna Cum Laude – first in his class.

John and Sara moved their family to the Port Huron area after accepting a position with the Port Huron City Attorney Office. This was followed by a successful private practice before being appointed to the District Court bench by Governor James Blanchard in 1983. John continued in this capacity until his retirement from the bench in 2003.

John was active in the St. Clair County Bar Association. The Association honored Judge Cummings with the John G. Cummings Professionalism Award for Mock Trial competitions. John was active in many civic, fraternal, and community service organizations.

He was a member of the American Legion Charles Hammond Post, Marysville Masonic Temple, St. Clair Knights of Columbus, the Port Huron Chapter of the NAACP, and the St. Clair Lions Club. He was a former coach in the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association. John is survived by two brothers, Patrick (Julie), and Owen (Ruth), his children Therese Cummings of Buda Texas, Mark Cummings of Phoenix Arizona, Carole (Richard) Kliemann of Marysville Michigan, Paul (Rochelle) Cummings of Lowell Michigan, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Visitation for John will be at Young Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in St. Clair on Saturday January 5 from 7pm to 9pm, Sunday January 6 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm with Rosary service at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clair on Monday January 7 at 11am with visitation at church one half hour prior to mass. John’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the St. Clair County Bar Association. Memorials in John’s name may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Camp Ozanam, and the Salvation Army. To leave a message of comfort visit www.
