OBITUARY John “Grandpa” Arcidiacono January 23, 1922 – October 28, 2018 Play Tribute Movie Giovanni “John” F. Arcidiacono Sr, age 96, of New Britain, beloved husband for 56 years of the late Lillian (Allawatt) Arcidiacono, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018. Born in New Britain, CT on January 23, 1922, son of the late Salvatore Arcidiacono and Giovannina (Bordiere) Arcidiacono, he was a lifelong resident of New Britain. John serviced his country in World War II in the US Army under the Company K 120th Infantry where he stormed the beach of Normandy, saw action in Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge.
Before his honorable discharge, John was wounded twice during his service, he earned The Oak Leaf Cluster with two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. After returning from the war, John went back to his position as a machinist at Fafnir Bearing where he worked until his retirement nearly 40 years later. During his retirement John and his wife enjoyed traveling, visits to the casino, golfing and caring for their grandchildren.
He was an avid Yankee fan, cherished his family and especially enjoyed family gatherings. John was the most loved man in anyone’s company. Besides his son John F. Arcidiacono, Jr and his wife Cheryl of Burlington, CT he leaves four grandchildren, Christopher Russo and his wife Abbi of Columbia, SC, Gregory Russo of San Diego, CA, Christina Kaschak and her husband John of Farmington, CT and John S. Arcidiacono of South Boston, MA; three great-grandchildren, Isaac Russo, Jonathan Russo and Samuel Russo all of Columbia, SC and a sister Josephine Salerno of New Britain, CT, son-in-law Robert Russo of West Hartford, CT, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Lillian, his daughter Joan B Russo, his sisters Constance Bruno and Natalie Gilberto and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. John’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Judy of Companions and Homemakers, the hospice staff of Hartford Healthcare and especially the staff of N-3 at HOCC New Britain for the wonderful care they showed John “Grandpa” when he visited them throughout the years. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday Nov.
3, 2018 at 9:00 AM from the New Britain Memorial-Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home 444 Farmington Ave. New Britain followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Mary of the Sea Church, 145 Main St., Unionville, CT. He will be laid to rest with full military honors in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain.
