John Henry Schmitt, 72, of Bayonne, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018, at the Lyons Veterans Hospital in Lyons, NJ. Born in Jersey City, he resided most of his life in Bayonne. In September of 1965 John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served 3 tours in Vietnam attaining the rank of Corporal.

He went on to receive the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam service Medal with 3 Stars and the RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm. After completing his military duties he worked as a machine operator with the Colgate Palmolive Company in Jersey City, a position he held for many years. John was predeceased by his parents, John Vincent and Roseanna (Donnelly) Schmitt and his brother James Phillip Schmitt.

He is survived by his dear friends, Salvatore Sucato and Chris Carpenter. A visitation will be held at the Dworzanski & Son Funeral Home on Monday, September 24, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Everyone is asked to assemble at St. Henry’s R.C. Church on Tuesday, September 25, at 9:15 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. mass in John’s honor.

Interment will follow at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
